Served as the secretary of the Congress Committee of Kerala in 1934 and later from 1938 to 1940.

1934- Formed the Kerala Congress Socialist Party along with P.Krishna Pillai and others.

1937- Became a member of the first ever communist group of Kerala.

1939- Played a decisive role in converting the entire Kerala Congress Socialist Party to the Communist Party.

1941- Became a member of the CPI State Committee.

1950- Became a member of the CPI Polit Bureau.

1953-1954 and 1955-1956 – Became the acting General secretary of CPI

1962-63 – Became the General Secretary, CPI

Served as a lifetime Polit Bureau member of the CPI (M) ever since its inception in 1964

Served as the General Secretary, CPI(M) from 1978 to 1991

EMS effectively led and brought about the historic triumph of the communist party in the first ever election conducted after the formation of the state of Kerala. Policy amendments with a sense of direction regarding land reforms and public education were initiated during the tenure of EMS as the chief minister of Kerala. His contributions to Vernacular Nationalism and Decentralization of Power are also memorable. The initiative of the much acclaimed Kerala Model was spearheaded during his period. Though the initial Legislative Assembly was dissolved in 1959, EMS became the Chief Minister of Kerala again during 1967-69.

EMS was elected to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1939.After the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly six times consecutively from 1957 to 1977.

EMS was the chief editor of Deshabhimani daily, chief editor of Marxist Samvadham and the Director of AKG Centre for Study and Research. Com. EMS played a pivotal role in formulating People’s Plan Programme.

No realm related to human was alien to Com.EMS Namboothiripad.
